Recovering a deleted or lost partition is not easy without the help of Mac recovery software. Luckily there’s a quick solution to help you recover lost partitions, even if you’re a non-tech-savvy person. Before that, let us understand a bit about the partitions on Mac.

Partitions are basically an internal or external hard drive split up into separate storage systems. When you partition the hard drive, you’ll get the option to choose what type of partition you want on Mac. Therefore it becomes necessary to be aware of partition types.

Mac consists of three types of partitions namely:

  • APFS (Apple File System): It is the default file system available on the Mac system. It offers high speed, strong encryption, and better data handling. It is best suited for newer versions of macOS and SSD’s.
  • HFS and HFS+  (Hierarchical File System): Used for older versions of Mac (macOS 10.2 or earlier) best suited for its cross-compatibility.

Note: Keep in mind to take a backup when you change the partition system, once you format all the data located on it will be erased.

Why does timing matter while locating missing partitions on Mac?

Usually, when a partition is missing or lost on macOS, the system removes that partition's address from the table and addresses that space as 'free'. Now, while this happening, if you use your Mac system or write new data on it, chances of overwriting the free space will be quite disastrous to locate lost partition.

Once overwritten, the chances of recovering the old data are very less. In essence, the more you use your system after a partition loss, the lesser the chances of recovering data from it. Hence, it is recommended that you recover data as soon as possible using an efficient tool like Remo Recover Mac.

What causes a Lost Partition on Mac?

A partition table holds details such as the size and addresses of all partitions ('C:', 'D:') on your volume. Even a minor corruption in this table can make the whole drive inaccessible and result in missing/lost partitions.

While partition table corruption is the most common cause for missing/lost Mac partition, there are also other reasons such as;

  • Improper partition resizing.
  • Third-party software that modifies the structure of the drive.
  • Errors during disk utility operations.
  • Bad sectors on the drive.
  • Other reasons include improper mounting of the hard drives.
